The use of essential oils may appeal to you because of their natural qualities. They are extracted from plants grown around the world. These methods are considered to be outside of typical medical treatments.

In general, you use essential oils for the practice of aromatherapy. This is the act of breathing in oils to stimulate your body. You may also choose to apply diluted oils onto your body. They are also commonly diffused into the air with an essential oil diffuser. Essential oils should be used with care, as they are potent and unregulated. You should see your doctor for a serious cough or if you have another health condition.

What Causes a Cough?

Coughs are a relatively common symptom of many illnesses, and it can be a side effect of minor to major inhaled irritants. Most common are coughs associated with your upper respiratory tract, such as the flu or the common cold.

Allergies, smoke, and other airborne irritants can lead to coughing fits. The same applies to bacterial infections present in your lungs like pneumonia and bronchitis. Essential oils might also soothe sore throats associated with upper respiratory conditions.

Essential Oils For Cough Congestion

1. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is an excellent essential oil for cough because it works as an expectorant, helping to cleanse your body of the microorganisms and toxins that are making you sick. It also dilates your blood vessels and allows more oxygen to get into your lungs, which can be helpful when you are constantly coughing and having trouble catching your breath. In addition to this, the major component in eucalyptus oil, cineole, has antimicrobial effects against many bacteria, viruses and fungi.

The best way to use eucalyptus oil as an essential oil for cough is to diffuse 5 drops at home, especially right before bed. Eucalyptus can also be applied topically to your chest and neck to reduce cough severity, but only use a very small amount — starting with 1–2 drops. Another great way to use eucalyptus and other essential oils for cough is to prepare a homemade vapor rub that’s made with olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, peppermint and eucalyptus. Keep in mind, eucalyptus should not be used topically on children under the age of 2 and when it’s being used on children, do a patch test first to make sure they don’t experience adverse skin reactions.

2. Peppermint

Peppermint oil is a top essential oil for sinus congestion and coughs because it contains menthol and it has both antibacterial and antiviral properties. Menthol has a cooling effect on the body, plus it’s able to improve nasal airflow when you’re congested by unclogging your sinuses. Peppermint is also able to relieve a scratchy throat that makes you dry cough. It’s also known to have antitussive (anti-cough) and antispasmodic effects.

Research conducted on healthy adults shows that peppermint oil relaxes the bronchial smooth muscles and increases ventilation, which is why it’s often used by athletes to enhance their exercise performance. It is these properties that allow peppermint to reduce coughing severity and improve your respiratory rate and ability to breath.

The best ways to take advantage of the many peppermint oil benefits for coughs and respiratory conditions is to diffuse 5 drops at home or work, inhale it directly from the bottle or apply 2–3 drops topically to your chest, back of neck and temples. When using peppermint topically, you can apply it alone, or combine it with coconut oil and eucalyptus oil to create a vapor rub. Remember that a little bit goes a long way, so start with just a few drops when using peppermint on your skin. Plus, don’t get it too close to your eyes or it can cause irritation. Do not use peppermint oil on the skin of children under the age of 2.

3. Geranium Essential Oil

Get rid of a cough, bronchitis, and other infections in the upper respiratory tract with geranium essential oil. This oil can exterminate the virus responsible for your condition, as experts have proved through various studies. Besides fighting infections, Geranium also smells extremely pleasant and is said to uplift your spirits and support your mental health.

Apply your geranium oil using a diffuser, and you will be able to inhale it through the air. You could also add it to your bathwater as this will make the oil get to every part of your body that needs therapy, depending on the related ailments attacking you.

Essential Oils For Cough In Child

Use a humidifier in your child’s room while they sleep. Adding some moisture to the air in your child’s bedroom while they sleep can really help soothe a dry, scratchy throat that only makes coughing worse.

Make sure your child is drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated is especially important when your little one is under the weather. It doesn’t take long for a child to get behind on fluid intake when they’re laying around not feeling good. Make sure to stay on top of it and keep a bottle of water nearby to encourage frequent sips.

*ONLY if your child is older than 12 months* give your child a small spoonful of honey right before going to bed. Honey can be dangerous for babies younger than 1-year-old and should never be given to this age group. If your child is older than 1, a small spoonful of honey immediately before laying down to go to sleep can help coat the throat and prevent the sensation of needing to cough. Often, this will help quiet a cough long enough to allow a little cougher to fall asleep.
